Position: Communications Strategist

Location: Fully Remote.

Some travel will be required in accordance with BLMP COVID travel policies.

Reports to: Communications Director

Status: Full-time, Exempt

Salary: $80,000

About BLMP

The Black LGBTQIA+ Migrant Project (BLMP) envisions a world where no one is forced to give up their homeland and where all Black LGBTQIA+ people are free and liberated. We build and center the power of Black LGBTQIA+ migrants to ensure the liberation of all Black people through Organizing & Base-building, Strategic Communications, and Viability & Sustainability. We are led by a directly impacted steering committee, staff and consultants, and operate organizing networks in New York City, DMV (DC, Maryland and Virginia region), Minneapolis, California, and the South. We build power, community, and knowledge in the U.S., while challenging the role that the U.S. plays globally in creating the conditions that force us to leave our homes.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Communications Director, the Communications Strategist will help develop and strengthen the overall communications strategy. As part of a 3-part communications team, the Communications Strategist will also conduct the day-to-day management of BLMP’s strategic communications strategy, by handling public relations, information output, collateral, and media requests for the organization, support the planning of social media campaigns, create and conduct communications programming and training for BLMP members, and manage all BLMP communications platforms, including (but not limited to) the website and blog. In all efforts, the Communications Strategist will work to ensure that we are consistently articulating BLMP’s mission through all of our communications outputs.

The Role

BLMP seeks mission driven candidates with a passion for Black liberation who will build and execute effective communications strategies on behalf of the organization while increasing visibility for its incredible programming.

You are a detail-oriented strategist who will be excited to own a variety of  projects from conception to completion.  You excel at managing and executing communications assets and systems, including the creation of original content that highlights BLMP’s impact and reflects our values. You thrive at anticipating needs and potential challenges and staying two steps ahead.

What You Will Do

  • Communications Strategy: In partnership with the Communications Director and Digital Organizer, develop and execute comprehensive communications strategies to meet organizational goals and ensure the delivery of impactful messaging.
  • PR & Press Cultivation: Identify, cultivate, and steward relationships with major media outlets, press contacts, and public relations teams.
  • Campaign Management: Supports the processes of designing campaigns to target specific audiences, placing an emphasis on campaign performance to help with recommendations for future actions.

  • Brand Building: Identify and present opportunities for consistency in narrative and messaging across all channels from BLMP swag to digital to print.

  • Collaboration: Build and maintain solid relationships with BLMP members to better develop, coordinate, carry-out, and facilitate strategic communications designed to meet organizational goals and initiatives.
  • Content Creation:  Design captivating, mission- aligned  multi platform content in alignment with organizational goals and value systems.

  • Membership Cultivation: Support Membership Training and Development, capacity building and member-led programming.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Proven experience in journalism, strategic communications, or equivalent.

  • Familiarity with community organizing and a passion for Black liberation, Black migrant justice and abolition of the carceral state.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to craft compelling narratives for digital and print.

  • Strong copywriting skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Proficiency across all social media platforms, Google Suite and Every Action.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, as well as lead a team of contracted graphic design and media production professionals.

  • Minimum of three years of strategic communications experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Passionate about Black liberation, Black migrant justice and abolition of the carceral state. Committed to centering and building the leadership of Black migrants and 1st generation Black people who identify as TGNCI, women, femmes, and/or who are living with disabilities. Bilingual.

Salary and Benefits

Starting salary is $80,000. Benefits include comprehensive health (medical, dental, vision, and FSA), matched retirement savings, three weeks’ vacation, sick and family leave, and sabbatical program.
